A huge archaeological discovery in Egypt
In the Saqqara area of Giza Governorate, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery of a well containing 13 human coffins that had been closed 2,500 years ago.
And in its statement, which was published on its official Facebook page, that the discovered well inside the coffins is about 11 meters deep, and colored wooden coffins were found sealed inside, and stacked on top of each other.
The Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled Al-Anani and the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mustafa Waziri inspected the excavation work of the Egyptian archaeological mission in the Antiquities Zone of Saqqara, which resulted in this new archaeological discovery.
The Egyptian minister said that 3 wells containing 13 coffins were uncovered, and then another 14 coffins were uncovered, bringing the total number of coffins discovered to date to 59, pointing out that the discovery was not over yet. "We found layers of coffins, which will be announced later."
Al-Anani explained that the coffins that were found are in a good state of preservation and are still preserving their original colors, indicating that the initial studies on them indicated that they date back to the 26th family era and that they belong to a group of priests, senior statesmen and prominent figures in society, announcing that these coffins will be transferred to The Grand Egyptian Museum is displayed in the hall opposite the hall dedicated to the display of the Asasif cache, which was found by the Egyptian archaeological mission in 2019 in Luxor, where about 32 closed coffins of the 22 priestesses and priestesses of the family were discovered.
According to what was mentioned in the statement, Khaled Al-Anani and Mustafa Waziri went to the bottom of the well to inspect the new archaeological discovery in preparation for announcing it in a press conference shortly.
Initial studies indicate that these coffins have not been opened since they were buried inside the well, and it is likely that more will be found in the sides of the well inside some niches located in the sides, one of which has been opened, and indeed a number of pieces of furniture and wooden coffins were found inside them.
So far, the identity and positions of the owners of these coffins have not been determined, and after the completion of the excavation and study work for them, a press conference will be held in the coming days to announce the details of this archaeological discovery.
And the area where this discovery was found is the "cemetery of senior statesmen" in Saqqara, in which the sacred cemetery of cats, animals, and birds was found, as well as the large discovery of the tomb of "Wahti", one of the priests of the beautiful Fifth Dynasty, which was praised by the whole world.
It is noteworthy that the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced more than one archaeological discovery during the past years in the Saqqara antiquities area, and this new discovery includes the largest number of coffins in one burial since the discovery of the Asasif in Luxor.
