A woman dies in India after being raped by two men
A woman from a Dalit group in India died after being gang-raped, after the death of another teenage girl from the same group in recent days, which sparked outrage in the country. According to what police said in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
This 22-year-old girl, a member of the shunned Dalit group in India, was raped by two men last Tuesday and died while being transported to the hospital.
This series of rapes and assaults came months after four people were executed by hanging for a similar crime of gang rape, and a student was killed in 2012 on a Delhi bus.
Police said that the two men were arrested and are being investigated on charges of gang rape and murder, and that the trial will likely take place in a special and speedy court.
"My daughter was barely standing or speaking," NDTV quoted her mother as saying. The incident took place in Palrampur district in Uttar Pradesh, about 500 kilometers from the place where another Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped in mid-September by four upper-class men.
The 19-year-old girl, who was paralyzed, was taken to hospital in New Delhi, 200 km away, but died on Tuesday.
Her killing sparked protests in Delhi and cities in Uttar Pradesh.
The 200 million Dalit community in India has long faced discrimination and abuse, and activists say attacks have increased during the coronavirus pandemic.
An average of 87 rape cases were reported each day in the past year, according to the latest data released on Tuesday by the National Crime Records Bureau, but large numbers are believed to go unreported.
The office reported an increase in the number of crimes against women committed by more than 7 percent in 2019 compared to the previous year.
