A group of researchers in Panama used pigs to test a ventilator intended for critically ill patients with shortness of breath.
Doctor Jose Manuel, who specializes in intensive care, said that animal experiments should be performed before they are tested on patients.
And animal No. 14 in the list of test pigs participated in a research program to develop a new model of ventilators, with the aim of preparing for any possible shortage of these devices.
Despite the decline in the number of deaths and injuries in recent weeks, the authorities fear facing a second wave of Corona virus as a result of the recovery of economic activity and the easing of isolation measures.
Therefore, Panama seeks to develop about 50 types of ventilators, according to Rolando Gittens, who is one of the coordinators of the research project.
"One of the main problems we faced was the global lack of equipment and devices," said Gittens.
In their experiments, the researchers resort to healthy wild boars, weighing between 25 and 40 kilograms, provided by Panamanian breeders.
The animals are placed in an artificial coma and connected to tubes, then researchers give them a salt solution that damages the lungs that simulates the breathing difficulties experienced by Corona patients who are in a dangerous condition.
The animal is connected to a traditional and homemade respirator for comparison, and after nearly two and a half hours of experiments, the animal is euthanized.
Veterinarian Juan Tapia commented on the experiment by saying: "We try as much as possible not to make the animals feel any pain."
