The effect of hookah on the body within half an hour
Hookah smoking has spread remarkably in recent decades in several regions of the world, but the unhealthy practice has been common for centuries in a number of eastern countries.
The World Health Organization previously warned against hookah, explaining that smoking through the famous pipe threatens toxic substances that cause lung cancer, heart disease and other health problems.
A study conducted by researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, revealed that a single session of hookah smoking severely damages the heartbeat, blood pressure and arteries stiffness.
The researchers relied on a sample of 48 adults without any health problems and had never smoked cigarettes, and then measured the effect of hookah smoking on them.
Before starting the test, the participants were subjected to measuring the heart rate, blood pressure and the extent of stiffness in the arteries, as well as examining a condition called "abdominal aortic aneurysm".
The stiffness of the arteries is one of the most prominent symptoms of stroke and also leads to other disturbances in the heart muscle, according to what was reported by "Medical News Today".
The researchers found that after 30 minutes of smoking hookah, the smokers ’heart rate rose by 16 beats per minute, and blood pressure increased significantly.
The study added that smoking hookah for half an hour raises the level of arterial stiffness, similar to what happens while smoking a regular cigarette.
The researchers believe that other damages may be more serious because the study measured the effect in only half an hour, and smokers who smoke hookah sometimes for long hours.
The study notes that adding fruit flavors to hookah "tobacco" increases its spread and encourages a number of young people to smoke it.
